Which lake should you choose in Provence?

For a spectacular first visit, choose Lake Sainte-Croix. For turquoise water in a more peaceful atmosphere, Esparron and Castillon are excellent alternatives. From the Luberon, Étang de la Bonde is the most convenient. Near Aix-en-Provence, Lake Peyrolles is particularly suitable for families.

Lake Sainte-Croix

At the mouth of the Verdon Gorges, Sainte-Croix offers the most spectacular picture: clear water, cliffs, beaches and villages overlooking the lake. For a more relaxed swim, choose a designated beach instead of an improvised roadside stop. Lifeguarded areas operate in July and August, particularly at Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon, Bauduen, Les Salles-sur-Verdon and Galetas.

Lake Esparron-de-Verdon

More intimate coves in the lower Verdon

Peaceful

Smaller than Sainte-Croix, Esparron is known for its coves, low cliffs and green to turquoise water. The lake is particularly enjoyable to explore by canoe, paddleboard or electric boat. Areas near the dam and water intakes are prohibited: remain within the marked zones.

Lake Castillon

North of the Verdon, Castillon combines a striking colour with a more mountainous landscape. The beaches at Le Plan, Le Cheiron and Saint-Julien-du-Verdon offer access to the water and watersports. Some beaches are lifeguarded in season; arrangements vary by location.

Étang de la Bonde

Swimming in the South Luberon

Our local choice

Yes, Étang de la Bonde deserves its place in this selection. Between Cabrières-d’Aigues, Sannes and La Motte-d’Aigues, it adds a genuine swimming break to a day in the South Luberon. It is less spectacular than the large Verdon lakes, but much more convenient from Lourmarin, Cucuron, Ansouis or Pertuis.

The official website states that it is open all year for walking and during the summer season for swimming. Access, parking and services vary depending on the time of year and the shore you choose: follow signs on site and check conditions before setting out.

The family-friendly option near Aix-en-Provence

Facilities

A former gravel pit transformed into a leisure park, Peyrolles offers a beach, play areas, picnic spaces and sports activities. It is less wild than the Verdon lakes but simpler with young children. Lifeguard supervision and paid parking are seasonal: check the dates and opening hours for the current year.

Lake Serre-Ponçon

Longer stay

Farther from the heart of Provence, Serre-Ponçon deserves an overnight stop or several nights. Its wide bays, mountains and numerous beaches create the feeling of an inland seaside resort.
