Hike in the Verdon Gorges
Choose a route suited to your level and set off early. Viewpoints also let you admire the gorges without committing to a long hike.
Luberon · Verdon · Mediterranean
Turquoise gorges, cedar forests, ochre cliffs, waterfalls and Mediterranean coves: twelve ideas for enjoying the outdoors and planning a holiday that does not feel like a race.
Change of pace
nature holidays in Provence are not limited to lavender fields. The region stretches from the hills of the Luberon to the waters of the Verdon, from inland waterfalls to the cliffs of the Méditerranée.
A rewarding trip means choosing a mountain range or valley as your base, then alternating one major outing with a slower moment each day.
Things to do outdoors

Canoes, kayaks and pedal boats offer another way to discover the Verdon. Book during busy periods and check the day’s conditions.
Roussillon and the Colorado Provençal offer unique mineral landscapes, especially beautiful in the morning and late afternoon.
Valensole, Sault and the Apt region do not bloom at the same time. Check the state of the fields before planning your entire holiday around lavender.
Our guide to the most beautiful waterfalls in Provence brings together sites by area, with useful access precautions.
Between Marseille and Cassis, the trails combine white rock and sea. In summer, access may be restricted depending on wildfire risk.
Provence’s mountain ranges offer shaded routes, perfect for a quieter half-day between visits.
Marshes, birds, horses and vast horizons completely change the pace of the trip. Observe discreetly and stay in designated areas.
Rivers, lakes and the sea require local checks: water quality, currents, access, parking and temporary restrictions.
Some estates offer dedicated trails or areas. Do not enter private plots without permission.
A café terrace, a path, a nap in the shade: nature is also experienced when you stop piling up activities.

Three landscapes, three days
Day 1
Set off early for Roussillon, walk along an authorised trail, have lunch in a village and finish at a viewpoint near Gordes or Lourmarin.
Day 2
Explore the landscapes of the Aix Region, choose a walk through vineyards or forest and keep the afternoon for the pool or a nap.
Day 3
Choose one major outing according to where you are staying: freshwater and gorges in the Verdon, or cliffs and sea in the Calanques.
Be prepared
Choose easy viewpoints, shaded walks and supervised water-sports centres. A successful short outing is better than an overly ambitious hike in the heat.
Rules vary by park, beach, reserve and season. Always check access and keep your dog on a lead when required.
Stay close to the landscapes
