An inner Provence

Recharge without necessarily travelling far

A spiritual journey in Provence can take many forms: a pilgrimage, a retreat, a discovery of religious heritage, a silent walk or simply the need to breathe. Here, stone, light and landscapes naturally create a different way of travelling.

This selection revisits the sites already brought together by ProvenceFrance, organising them by area to create a realistic itinerary that respects each place.

A simple rule

Choose three or four nearby places rather than a long list. A restorative journey loses its meaning if you spend all your time on the road.

Take your time

3-day spiritual itinerary in Provence

Day 1

Sénanque, Gordes and Lumière

Start early at Sénanque, continue to Gordes and then make your way to Notre-Dame de Lumière. Keep the end of the day free for walking or reading.

Day 2

Avignon and Villeneuve

Visit the Palace of the Popes in the morning, cross the Rhône, then allow several hours for the Charterhouse and the gardens of Saint-André Abbey.

Day 3

Choose one major sanctuary

Depending on your starting point, choose Cotignac and Sainte-Baume, Saint-Rémy and Montmajour, or Saint-Honorat Island. Do not try to combine all three areas.

Tip: check opening days, services, access conditions and dress requirements before you leave. Some places remain first and foremost spaces of religious life, silence or prayer.

Plan ahead

Make room for calm

  • Plan just one major visit per half-day.
  • Turn off notifications for a few hours.
  • Bring water and good walking shoes for Sainte-Baume.
  • Respect private areas, religious services and photography restrictions.
  • Avoid the busiest times to experience the atmosphere of the place.

Religious journey or restorative retreat?

The two approaches can coexist. Christian heritage shapes much of this selection, but the landscapes, walking and silence also make these places meaningful for anyone simply seeking an inner pause.

Where can you go on a spiritual retreat in Provence?

Sénanque, Cotignac, Sainte-Baume and Saint-Honorat Island are among the best-known places. Hospitality and retreat arrangements vary, so contact the place directly before travelling.

Can you visit these sites if you are not religious?

Yes. Most also welcome visitors interested in history, architecture, walking or silence. Respect for religious practices and spaces remains essential.

Three days allow you to combine the Luberon with Avignon and a third area. For genuine rest, stay four to five days and limit travel.
